It is time to change (Hari Raya mood)..after more than 40k km (>1 year)

I am happy with Federal Evo 595 but the wide sidewall does not permit me to go with 215/45/R17 and the only option is to stick with 205/45 to avoid from rubbing with my rear fender.

It is observed that there is hairline crack at both front tyres with uneven thread wear (quite bad actually) and 2 of my RH wheel dented, luckily it is minor and I have it repaired.

I have chosen Nexen N6000 215/45ZR17 for my ride..

Can it serve me better than Federal Evo 595? See how it goes..

My Elantra X20 clocked more than 120k km and today, as usual, I bring it over to KBPJ Service Centre for service. Aidilfitri (Eid ul fitr) is approaching and had to get it ready for "Balik Kampung" end of this month.

I was informed that it is suppose to be major service but looking at the current mileage, I will do that on the next service.

3. Rear absorber nut loosen (Rectified earlier, just to ensure that it is in good condition)

My search is finally over.

I wish to improve my X20 suspensions (which to me is quite soft) but with tight budget and difficult to get aftermarket parts does keep me wondering for a while...

After seeking an advise from local Hyundai rep, I have an option for a better OEM parts, which is an equivalent to the stock absorber but with higher damping rate, a perfect replacement to my stock absorber.

Have it install today and can immediately feel the impact.. it goes well with my Eibach springs as well..

Aidil Fitri (Eid ul- fitr) is coming in a week and it is time to sent my car for inspection and checking before I went back to my home town for the celebration.

Basically the car is in good condition, just complete its 90K KM service recently and it is about time for me to check the wheel alignment and balancing.

Then I found out that 2 of my front wheel bent! Maybe Raya mood does struck my ride too.. I've just change the tyre during my last visit and now..

So I decide to negotiate and see what would be the best deal if I decide to trade the wheel to the new set (what the heck its Hari Raya anyway)..

Its an imitation Pro N1 Black Racing wheel and it does looks good with my ride.

Its been a while since I received the filter but am too lazy to put it in. The filter is suppose to be replaced at every 15K km and I'm doing it after 80K km hehehe.

Hyundai Elantra / Avante X20 - Squeaking Sound from Head Unit Cover

I'm getting annoyed by the squeaking sound from the head unit cover. I notice that the cover looks like it was not installed properly and I have to push it in.. the sounds gone for a while but then, it happens again.

I believe most of the X20 owner have the same problems and don't be surprise when you remove the head unit cover, only 4 out of 8 clips were there (Wonder why another 4 is missing..hmmm)

Top of the cover (only 2 clips installed - 1 & 4, the remaining 2 missing) the same goes at the bottom

Not to prolong the issue, I just bought another 4 clips and have it installed.. and so far, I'm satisfied with the result.

Hyundai Elantra / Avante X20 - Tyre Crisis.

Arghh.. my new tyre hit the rear fender when driving on bumpy road.. Check with the tyre shop and they told me that Federal tyre is slightly wider in shape even compared to my previous Neuton.

It is very frustrating as if I know it earlier, I might go for another size or brand but have to admit apart from rubbing with the fender, the the tyre is not that bad.

Finally I decide to go with smaller size, 205/45/17 Federal 595 EVO tyre.

Travel down south next week.. with all new rubber.

Hyundai Elantra / Avante X20 - Tyre Change.

Neuton 215/45/R17 tyre had served me for more than a year now (>40k km) and the thread is still in fair condition. However, there is crack spotted on it recently and frankly I didn't expect it to be this bad.

So today I went to the tyre shop to check thoroughly and found that 3 out of 4 tyre is effected. Here how it looks.
After much of thinking and negotiating with the shop, I finally decided to replace all 4 tyre with new Federal 595 215/45/R17.

Well I guess I have to change my tyre at every 40K km based on the history so far.. hmphhh. ;(

Hyundai Elantra / Avante X20 - Trailing Arm.

The long waited adjustable trailing arm has finally arrives...

I have it install today and the installation is quite easy.. there is 3 bolts involved, 2 for trailing arm (a1 & a2) and 1 for the absorber (a3) to ease the trailing arm bolt removal (as shown on the photo)... plug and play.

After complete with the installation, I went to the tyre shop immediately for alignment correction. It is really exciting to see how easy the mechanic can adjust both the toe and chamber to get the right reading.

I have it install quite sometime ago. But after getting queries about it from several friends of mine, then only I realize that it is missing from my posting.

The work was done on February last year and yes, I can feel the difference immediately after having it installed...

Before installation.

At this moment, it is impossible to get Elantra/Avante X20 extractor in the market but the shop manage to find an alternative to it. They tried Matrix 1.8 extractor and walla.. it fit nicely to the mounting. However, minor adjustment need to be done to the end flange connected to the exhaust mid section as the flange orientation is slightly different.. no big deal.

New hole created for the O2 sensor as the ready made connection is being plugged and you can also see the bottom part has been cut in order to adjust the end flange orientation.

Next is the muffler.

The installation is quite fast, cut, remove and install.

After everything is completed, I have the ECU reset before I start the engine.

Hyundai Elantra / Avante X20 - T10 Crisis

I have tried several T10 LED Bulb but so far it burnt easily and quite costly as well.

So today, I bought an ordinary filament bulb but in blue colour lights.

The light is not as bright as LED but it is good enough for me. Hopefully it can last longer..

Hyundai Elantra / Avante X20 - Knocking Sound Updates

So far so good, sound no more..

It has been 2 weeks now after the rectification works is done and there is no more irritating sound. But before I can rest with my verdict, there are silly things which is not supposed to happen if the service centre is having a good quality control and follow whatever standard they have for a good maintenance and repair practice...

The works is taking more than a week but the result does pays off. After several test drive and confirm that it is due to the body knocking, my ride was taken to the panel body shop behind the service centre.

To correct it, they have to remove the front bumper, fender and headlamp... it is really sad to see my ride without these thing..
Here is the culprit.. it came from the edge of side frame connected to the body. There is a gap or crack and it is not welded and sealed properly.....
After the area is resealed, the issue solved. Thumbs up on troubleshoot and solving the problem.

Sadly, it does not ends there.. The night I took my car from the service centre, I went out testing it further and it is not far before I heard the rubbing sound. Front side of the plastic wheel cover, which is not installed properly had fell down and touched the road, adding to my surprise, most of the clips is also not installed..

Got to make another trip to SC to replace this part..
New wheel cover installed..
Pity.. they have to replace it due to silly reason. I have them checked on all the clips as well..

Just when I thought that everything is now in order, another sound is heard. This time, it is due to a misplaced part inside the fender, flapping against the body and fender..

No matter how good they solve the problems, it all goes to drain.. poor workmanship by the panel body shop does affected the service centre reputation.

I can see that there is a lot of vehicle under repair in the same shop and wonder what would be the issue faced by the owner when they have their ride back.

MyVi SE 1.3A - Engine Problem.

It happened last Friday, 11.12.2009. The engine sounds like it is running in 3 cylinder and it comes in sudden, while my wife is driving home from a grocery shop.

When I look at it, the engine is shaking with very rough sound and the RPM is going crazy up and down. Both of us really frustrated with the condition as we just own it and it is not even reached 5000km yet!

So happen, it was public holiday and we can only to bring it to the service centre on Saturday. We sent it to the usual service dealer for inspection.

On Tuesday afternoon, the dealer call me and asked me to refer my car to Perodua Branches as they does not have proper tools to detect the problems. So I went to Perodua in Glenmarie and after 2 days, they called and informed that the problem has been rectified.

Basically, it has got something to do with the EFI system and they have check and erase the malfunction code that caused failure to one of the injection point. It is also related to the jerking problems earlier.

So far, the engine is working fine and I also observed that there is no more jerking when the car is idle. Really wish that the problems is solved, totally...

It is almost a week now since I've send my ride to SC for the knocking sound rectifications. So far they have done some repair and the job is expected to be completed tomorrow (Monday, December 7th) Hopefully everything is well taken care off and I can have my ride back by tomorrow..

I have the knocking sound problem since the day I own this car, but I kind of taking for granted, hoping that it will go away after driving it for a while.

The sound is something like metal knocking coming from the front right hand side when the car is start moving and when you hit on the brake, there are occasions where you can hear it when you turn the wheel.

After several inspection and rectification done by SC, they come to conclusion that it is due to body knocking and it would take about a week for them to rectify it. I can't afford not to have my car during the weekdays as I am traveling a lot. They supposed to get me the loan car for that period but sadly until today, they can't get it for me.

So I have decided to send my car this week for the body rectification work as I have to get rid of the sound once and for all.. hopefully, they are right about what caused the problem and it would be good if they can settle it within few days..

My MyVi is supposed to hit 5000km and due for service but instead, after 3 month, it only clock 3429km. Never mind that, send for service anyway.

Surprise to know that MyVi does not have the air-cond cabin filter before. They have the housing where the filter should be but it does not come with the filter... no matter what, it is good to have the filter installed. Ironically, I just received the same filter for my X20 earlier this week ordered via group buy.. just don't have the time to install it yet.

For record, the jerking problem is not yet solved and SC is recommending me to send my ride to Perodua Branch. With better equipment, they might be able to detect what caused the problem.

Hyundai Elantra / Avante X20 - Eibach Prokit Performance Springs

Its started with weekend window shopping habits to aftermarket outlets and this time it is ended with Eibach Prokit Performance Springs.

It is surprise to know that Eibach does have the springs for Elantra/Avante HD and that is indeed the main reason why I have it installed immediately.

MyVi SE 1.3A - Extractor

Install extractor to my ride on Saturday last week. I have not replaced the muffler and the mid section yet, it would be done later..

Hassle work.. need to remove the bumper and few attachments for an access to the exhaust manifold...

Stock manifold c/w cat converter, compared to the 4-1 extractor..

The good thing about this particular extractor is that it comes with the bracket for the stock manifold cover.. nicely fit.

MyVi SE 1.3A - Send for Inspection - UPDATES

Its been more than a week after I sent my MyVi for inspection.

The car is still jerking and I went to the service centre again yesterday to rectify the problem.. Just when I thought that everything is good.. the car jerks again this morning..

Wonder what is the real culprit.. it looks like I have to pay a visit to the service centre again next week..

Hyundai Elantra / Avante X20 - In search for the Bodykit.

I have designed and talked with body kit shop recently on new set for my ride.

What I have in mind is a custom carbon fibre body kit plus other accessories as well, but after working on the cost, I have to put in on hold..., hmm.. you know why...

All the sudden, good news arrived. My fellow THM forumer told me that there are bodykit supplier that selling the imitate INCUS design elantra body kit made of ABS material and not fibre glass. The cost is far cheaper than the original INCUS and it include installation.

This is what my X20 will look like when installed with INCUS design bodykit..

But it will be in black and aspen silver of course ;p

It is a good news indeed.

MyVi SE 1.3A - Send for Inspection.

This is the second time I send my MyVi for inspection since there is no improvement to the brake and some other issues: -

1. Braking is too light and it doesn't really feel the grip.
2. Loud sound when the car start moving at the wheel.
3. Irritating sound from the rear.
4. Jerking when the car is idle.

Rectification done by SC: -
1 & 2. Bleed the brake, setting and testing
3. Rear Absorber screw loose - Re tighten
4. Reset ECU.

The distance from SC to my office is just nearby and can't really tell the different, will test it on my way back home, later.

Hope all the problems really rectified.

I send my elantra for 60,000km service today (Odometer: 59336).

The Service Center recommended to change the timing belt but I put it on hold first. Will do it when it reached 100,000km.

There is some minor adjustment required to my boot but it can wait since I have to rush for an appointment. Will do that on my next visit.

To Kenso, great review and write-up!..

Impressions are, at times funny things. Most of the time, it is limited to our past experiences and more often than not, colored by other people's opinions and feedback. Hyundai, in my books is for someone who couldn`t afford a Japanese yet wants to move away from Malaysian brand cars. Hyundai equates to poor build quality and high fuel comsumption, thanks to some comments made by some owners of earlier generation Sonata and other Korean cars like Atos.

The Avante is a company car; for business owners/directors, the 5 year warranty is a very encouraging piece of argument for company cars since company cars that are trashed within the period can be repaired at very lost cost to the company. Furthermore, it's size makes it more ideal to ferry Caucasian clients around. I wasn't thrilled when I heard I was going to get a Hyundai which was a much bigger car (reasons being listed above). When when the car came and I had to return the Vios I was driving for the past 3 years, I wasn't excited at all. Moving from a Japanese brand to a Korean sounds like a downgrade to me.

Without a doubt, the X20 is a car with very sexy curves. I may be biased against Hyundai but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate beauty when I see one. Seeing it parked beside other sedan cars will give you the impression that it's a really big and tall car. Sure enough, headroom is absolutely fantastic, both for front and rear passengers. Moving my butt in, I`m struck by how supple the leather feels and its perforated leather. A friend once told me only with good leather can we have homogenous perforation. I was surprised to note that the leather in the X20 is DK Schweizer leather, 1 of the more reputable brands around. Seat comfort is seriously one of the best in its class.

I`m a tech freak .... I like buttons and controls. The dash of the X20 has a minimalistic quality yet with sufficient buttons to satisfy me. The locations of the buttons are ergonomically designed and placed. There are audio controls (volume, mode, search) on the steering wheel. Too bad there is no cruise control unlike many found in other countries. There are a few compartments to store ur stuffs. A 2-tiered compartment center armrest is useful. I keep my Touch&Go card as well as my car keys on the shallow tier while the 2nd tier is deep enough to put a big Ricola candy can and a spectacle case easily. One compartment is above the headunit, one below the aircon controls and an illuminated glove compartment. Moving all my things from the Vios to the Avante, I've got so many extra spaces. There are a total of 4 cup holders, 2 in the center next to the hand brake and 1 on each side of the front passenger doors. In case you're wondering how many drinks can a normal person bring to the car, young parents will find this most useful as they need a place to put their water container, milk container, baby bottles, etc. when mixing milk.

Many owners have said they love the airconditioning unit of the car. This is very true as the airconditioning unit behaves very much like a automatic climate control system, the fan speed gradually increases as your car engine warms up. While this car doesn't have rear aircon vents, there are 2 vents under the 2 front passengers. The bottom vents works when the driver selects the blower to aim the top/leg and leg. This helps to cool the car down very quickly. Not cool if anyone in the car has smelly legs ... your cabin will also have a particularly offending aroma in a short time as well.

Moving the car out for the first time, the 143PS power is nice. Having tested both Nissan Sylphy, Lancer and Civic (was looking for a 2.0litre car), the power is better compared to the Sylphy and Lancer but loses to Civic. What blew me away was the suspension; it was absolutely fabulous. After the first few kilometers, I wondered at myself why Toyota has always been regarded the KING in suspension ... this Hyundai would definitely give it a run for its money. It has independant suspension, a far cry from those linked MacPherson systems and this really shows as you go through our country's ample potholes and bumps. NVH surpasses all my expectations. It's even better than a lot of Japanese cars. The next time you find yourself in a Hyundai showroom, just slam the door and you'll find that's very good insulation on the door itself. The only gripe I have against the NVH is the Goodyear NCT5 tyres are well know to be noisy. This issue can be easily rectified by changing to a more silent tyre.

Ok, so what about the main issue I have with Korean cars? The fuel consumption. Since the car is new and has yet to do makes its first 1k km run, I decided to run it in a little (keeping below 3k rpm while revving it up and down without keeping to any constant speed). For my troubles, I was rewarded about 440km/43litres of fuel. Not bad, considering this is a much heavier car (and I'm not even driving it very efficiently). Now that I`ve done the first 1k km service, FC is still erratic but it's still clocking an average of 0.17cents/kilometer. I am impressed.

Oh, not sure if this was mentioned by others ... it's a small thing, really but I appreciate this feature. In most cars, if you forgot to switch off the lights and you turn the engine off, your car would give you an audiable beep to indicate your lights are on. The X20 doesn't ... it turns off the lights when your engine is off. Some might argue they need the lights on when they open the gate, etc, but honestly, how many of us actually turn off the engine when we alight? How many of us have forgotten to switch off our headlamps?

In the end, the Avante is an eye opener for me. Not only is it a far more comfortable car, fuel consumption is seriously not bad. If you were to look at the owner's manual, you'll note a lot of specs is missing from the X20s found here in Malaysia. Sun-roofs, auto cruise, keyless entry/start, etc. But the fact is, that's how these cars come in. You don't get as much features in a Sylphy and yet it costs so much more. The Civic and Mazda 3 is probably the most well endowned with features but look at the price. Speaking of price (and the often associated 2nd value), let's look at the following:

Price difference between X20 and Civic = approx. RM30,000
Loan interest = 3.5% x eg. 5 years loan = RM5,250
Total amount of difference = RM35,250

Civic 2nd value after 5 years = estimated RM76,800 (calculated at 10% depreciation/year)
X20 2nd value after 5 years = RM57,900
Price difference = approx. RM18,900

So you see ... at the end of the day, the total initial payment price difference would have offset the 2nd value difference. The difference is actually greater because imagine you have RM35,250 in your bank account ... even if you were to put it into Fixed Deposit running at 3.5%p.a, you would have made a couple of thousand in 5 years time. Granted the above calculation is based on assumption, you have to ask yourself this ... do you think, 5 years from now, the 2nd price of the 2 cars will be more than RM35,250 apart? Compared to the Civic, you pay less but you get a more comfortable car that has comparable cabin space. The only setback is .... you're not driving a "Honda".

I used to think my next car would be a Honda or a Toyota. Now I would very seriously look at Hyundai when I'm shopping for a new ride. Don't let others impress you with what they think .... at the end of the day, impressions are, after all fleeting. Your car, however should last longer

Voltage Stabilizer In My Rides.

After a while of comparing, testing and searching, I've made up my mind and install voltage stabilizer to my Elantra yesterday.

So now, both of my ride have installed with this product.

First for my MyVi which installed with Pivot Raizin (Blue Raizin).

Followed with Pivot Mega Raizin (Purple Raizin) for my Elantra (c/w Digital Display).

First day reading for my elantra:
Lowest Voltage (at the engine start): 7.3
Real Voltage: 14.5

Huyndai Elantra / Avante X20 - Battery Kaput...

This morning I realize that my battery is out and the clock stop at 1.00am. Try few time until it comes to the rattling sound.

Call Hyundai emergency call center for new battery but after waiting for almost 1hr. I decided to cancel it and get it by myself.

Lucky me, I manage to start the engine and immediately goes to the workshop nearby my house.

First, they put in DIN55 as per stock but later, they found out that the new battery is not functioning and that is the only one that they have in stock.. back to square one. So, they replace it with NS70L battery at the same price.. hmm bigger is better huh.

My stock battery last for about 1.5 years and running about 58,000km only.

Maybe it is about time to replace or it is about time for me to consider installing voltage stabilizer and improve my battery life in future?? arghh sakit kepala!!

My wife and I decided to trade our MyVi EZ with the new MyVi SE.
We have been driving it for about a month now and here is some of my findings: -
- The suspension is a bit stiff and bumpy on uneven road but quite good when handling corners.
- Steady at high speed.
- Pick-up is quite good for a stock car.
- Brakes however is a bit disappointing, new parts perhaps..
- Nice interior with black leather seat matching the overall color of interior.
Wish list: -
- ATF Cooler
- K&N Drop in Filter
- Additional Paint job to the body + PPS
- Extractor & Sport Muffler+Twin tail pipe
- Voltage stabilizer

I get my ATF cooler last week via group buy and have it installed today.

Things inside the box.. with additional hose.

It is quite easy to dismantle the bumper and need to remove the fan, right headlamp, air intake and the battery to ease the installation.

It took less than 1 hour to complete. Tested my ride and can feel the gear shift is smoother.

Drive my way la.. ;p

Moving Out.

It has been a tiring weeks now as I'm moving out to new rented house...

So far I've managed to complete my room painting and shifted necessary items into it. The installation of air conditioning unit, water heater and additional wiring works has been completed.

From today onwards, I need to start and complete all the painting works at living hall, walkway and another room as well. Hopefully I can move all the things by end of this week.

Luckily I'm moving from 3rd floor to Ground floor, same block.. hihi.

Perodua MyVi EZ - Rectified..

Its been a while since I did something to our MyVi and this week, I take it for a spin and man.. there is a lot need to be done.

First, the front absorber need to be replace, tyre is about time for change out, but amongst all, the wheel vibrates when braking does makes me really frustrated. The reason is simple, the problem should have been rectified since both front disc and caliper assembly has been replaced under warranty few months back...

Well things happens, what matters now is ensure that the ride is in good condition even though it travels light since we have bought Elantra X20 last year.

This is what I did last week..

Wheel and rubber change.. Upgrade to 15"

Stock wheel & rubber, 175/65/R14

New Driftmaster wheel comes with Silverstone M5, 195/55/R15

New Disc brake, replaced under warranty..

This time, they change only the disc and not the whole assembly. Tested for few days now, so far ok.

New front absorber - ..

Pro-ride absorber dual valve specs just like Monroe.. recommended by a friend, I give it a try.

The ride feels better and safer.. ;p

Hyundai Elantra / Avante X20 - A year old.

It has been a year since I bought my first ever brand new car..Hyundai Elantra X20 or Elantra HD, 2.0 CVVT.

After the road tax and insurance is renewed at KB223, I sent it for a body and engine wash, which included leather seat cleaning and other panel as well. It cost me RM120.00 but after seeing the results, its worth paying for. Now the interior looks brand new again.. reborn after a year.
Consider it anniversary gift to my X20 (My wife called it "Cinta") ;)

Hyundai Elantra / Avante X20 - Wheel Bolt Replacement

I went to Hyundai Service Centre this morning to replace 1 of last weeks' broken wheel bolt.

Thought that the bolt change out would be simple and fast but it isn't so.
While loosing the wheel nut, one of it stuck and as the mechanic tries to undo it, the bolt broken. Hmm another bolt need to be replaced, at the same wheel (Front, Driver side).It doesn't make sense, two bolts broken within a week for a car that less than a year old? Is it really due to over tightening of the nut as claimed for the 1st bolt? if so, how come the same problems occurred when it is installed by the claimant it self? or it is simply because of the bolt itself? Low quality of material?Puzzled with the outcome, and after seeking an advise from a friend, I've decided to change all 5 bolts instead of just 2. At least I can rest assure that all bolts are brand new and the same problems will not be repeated again.I have also asked the mechanic to check on the remaining wheels and it is observed that all the bolts to the remaining wheels are in good condition and still shining compared to the one that having the problem now.

I discussed the issue with the Service Manager, we agreed that I have to pay for the parts and he will not charge on the labour since this part is not covered under warranty.

As I thought it is over and I can wait and rest while they re-install the components, another problem comes out and this time it is the bearing. The bearing jammed when the try to press the spool with the bolt to its place. I could not bear the news and just leave it to them to resolve it...

Hyundai Elantra / Avante X20 - New 17" wheel

My X20 is about a year old now and it travel almost 40000km so far. I must say that I am among satisfied few that owned this particular Hyundai model.

I went to a tyre shop this afternoon, look out for any nice rims for my future wheel change out. It should be a brief visit but guess what, it ended up with new set of 17"wheel for my ride.

Lavinhard 17" Wheel (17 X 7.5) with 215/45/R17 tyre.

My wife and I celebrated our 1st anniversary and her birthday recently. We went to Genting Highland and spend a night over there, we do enjoy our time together and to my lovely wife Alhana, Happy Birthday and Happy Anniversary.. I Love you so much, May Allah bless both of us.

I'm in Miri today on a business trip and will be back to KL tomorrow night. Been busy lately with a lot of things to attend to.. Anyway, I'm blessed today when I met my mother in LCCT while rushing to board the plane, what a coincident!. She is coming back from Sabah with my eldest brother and his family.
